Abstract:This 90-minute workshop will be led by a panel from the Hawaiian Islands Group Psychotherapy Society discussing some of the core principles of group psychotherapy and how they can be utilized in a range of groups we interact in within our communities. The five stages of group development will be discussed with examples of how they occur in different settings. Specific attention will be placed on the role of conflict within the stage of Storming as an opportunity to practice skills and grow as individuals and as a group. Leadership styles, challenges in group settings, and leader strategies will be explored. The role of boundaries, safety, and trust in group settings will be discussed with leadership strategies to develop these components.
Facilitating groups over online platforms with participants from multiple islands will be one of the examples explored to highlight group dynamics and stages of group development.
